WITNESS OF THE SPIRITS Rom. 8:16; 1 Cor. 2:11
INTRO:  Many teach today that we must have a miraculous manifestation of
the Holy Spirit to prove that the Holy Spirit bears witness with our
Spirit. But let’s see what the Word of God teaches.
I. THE HOLY SPIRIT TESTIFIES OF GOD. 1 COR. 2:11. A. Holy Spirit testifies of God through inspired men.   Neh. 9:30; Acts 20:23; John 16:13; Acts 2:4; 2 Pet. 1:21. B. Holy Spirit’s Testimony of God is in the Scriptures.   God promised a new covenant and remission of sin.  Heb. 10:15-17; Jer. 31:31-34. Men that said these things were directed by God.  Note Heb. 3:7-11.  Same as in Psa. 95:7-11.  Holy Spirit directed men to say these.  Holy Spirit said through Isaiah.  Acts 28:25-27.  Same as Isa. 6:9-10. David through the Spirit foretold of Christ.  Acts 1:16.  John made know, as the Spirit directed.  Rev. 1:7. C. The Holy Spirit testifies of God through men, in the Scriptures, that he will save obedient from sins.  B.R.C.B. Saved. D. He will finally save the faithful. He is coming again.   Rev. 1:7. So, we should prepare.  Phil. 2:12.  Christ is the author of eternal salvation to those who obey.  Heb. 5:8-9; 1 John 2:3-4, 6; 2 Pet. 1:5-11. E. The Scriptures describe Christians.   Rom. 8:13-14-16.  The Holy Spirit testifies of God through the Word that was written by men led by the Holy Spirit. II. OUR SPIRIT TESTIFIES OF MAN. Our spiritual man is the only one that knows what we have done.  It tells us what we have done.  1 Cor. 2:11. We know what the Holy Spirit has testified by reading the Bible.  And we know whether we have done the things commanded.  Heb. 10:22.  The Holy Spirit bears witness with our Spirit.  We are told by him in the Word what to do and, when we do it, our conscience is freed from evil that we have done.  Our spirit has the Holy Spirit for a witness that we have obeyed.   A. We can not go on feelings; feelings are no evidence of what God has done.  We know we have done God’s will; not just feel like we have.  1 Cor. 2:11.  Jacob felt Joseph was dead.  Gen. 37:23-35.  Paul felt he was right, but was chief of sinners.  1 Tim. 1:15; Acts 23:1; John 16:2. B. The Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we have obeyed the Gospel. We know.   C. The Holy Spirit bears witness with my spirit that I am Faithful.   I worship and live as the Spirit directs.  2 Tim. 4:7-8.
CONCL:  My Spirit knows that it has the marks of a Christian, because it does as the Holy Spirit directs, therefore the Holy Spirit bears witness with  my Spirit because I have done what I have been commanded in the Bible.
